English-Borana Wordlist

Foreword
In presenting this English-Borana word list
it is necessary to explain
a few things about the
list. First of all, the word
list
is offered as an aid
to any English speaker who
is interested in learning the Borana lan-
guage, a dialect of the widely spoken Oromo language of Ethiopia.
The basis for this word list is Aadaa Boraanaa, A Dictionary of Borana
Culture which was produced by Rev. Ton Leus and Cynthia Salvadori
and published in March, 2007.
Since many Borana words do not have an equivalent in the English
language many words will not be found herein. For example, the
names of many of the Borana religio-social ceremonies such as GUB-
BISA, MOGATTI. Also, the English names of many of the trees and
shrubs were not known by the authors of Aadaa Boraanaa so, only the
few that were known in both languages can be found in this list
